Rebecca Martinolich and Naomi Danos were enjoying coffee while sitting on one of the shop’s couches last week.
“It’s very nice and very cozy. We normally do Starbucks, but we don’t like their regular coffee and we really like PJ’s regular coffee. I like the big windows and the comfy couches by them. You don’t feel trapped,” Danos said.
The Thibodaux PJ’s, which opened Monday, is owned by the same husband-and-wife duo who own the PJ’s on St. Charles Street in Houma. Jeremy and Jackie Griffin said opening the Thibodaux location was a natural expansion because of its proximity to Houma, their ties to the community as Nicholls State University grads and the need for a smaller, more local coffee shop in the city.
“Our point of differentiation as opposed to some of your other coffee chains is quality. Our roasting facility is in New Orleans, just outside the French Quarter, and they only select the top 1 percent quality beans, and we roast the beans in smaller batches for more control,” Jeremy Griffin said. “It’s a well-established brand that’s been in New Orleans since 1978, and it’s definitely a staple of New Orleans and the local area.”
The coffee house, at 200 E. Bayou Road in the same building as the United Community Bank, almost looks like it’s in the bank at first, but customers don’t seem to mind, and the bank’s employees seem to enjoy their new neighbor.
“I’ve been to the ones in New Orleans and they always feel inviting and so does this one,” Martinolich said. “It doesn’t really feel like it’s in the bank.”
